When the cold starts to hit, we often hit back with our winter clothing. Winter clothing, by the way, has made some huge strides in the last 100 years. It’s lighter and warmer than ever before, but what happens when that light-weight, super-warm shirt, sweater, jacket, or pants becomes too warm after you reach your office? Now you see where I’m going. You’re going to get too hot, and if you can't remove that garment because it would leave you improperly dressed, you’ll stay hot all day. Schedule an appointment with one of our fitters to discuss these details further or to look at the countless high-end-fabric options we have available for you. #1 KEEP IT SIMPLE You’ll want to wear lighter weaves or thinner fabrics against your skin. Heavier, thicker fabrics are best as overlayers. For example, one of our white button-downs would do well as a base layer. Now, you can throw on a medium-weight sweater and a 350 grams or heavier wool jacket. Don’t forget about your legs. Layer on both sides. I usually wear a pair of leggings, or “long johns,” under my slacks when winter hits.
RULE #2: YOU’RE A LIGHTBULB The topic on color theory is ongoing and far too vast to cover here. That being said, I’ll do my best to keep you looking good. Realizing color issues is a growing pain that will make you a better dresser overall. While you’re learning, stick to the idea that you’re a lightbulb: Light on the inside and darker as you get further away. When you get used to that, start to work in a few colorful sweaters, turtlenecks, and jackets. My most basic layering for walking to the office is a white shirt, my navy suit, a camel overcoat, camel gloves, and a cashmere scarf. When in doubt, stay in shades of black.
RULE #3: KEEP IT SIMPLE, AGAIN This is not a time to hide your clothing that is ill fitting or ugly under a jacket. The magic of layering is that you can, ideally, acclimatize to any environment, which means that ugly shirt with the baggy armholes will be seen, or you will just have to leave the overlayer on. And guess what-- then you’re hot all day. We talked about this. This rule is easy because you simply need to wear nice clothes that fit. Done. you’re ready to get started.
